Owner Bio

The Oak Ridge Bombers are based in the scenic mountains of East Tennessee, in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains, about 60 miles from theGreat Smoky Mountains.  The owner is home town boy Mike Coveyou, who now lives in Des Moines, Iowa.  The team plays in Oliver Springs, having moved just after the 1943 season from a nearby area in rural Anderson County.  The name of the team comes from Oliver Springs being located in three counties:  Anderson, Roane, and Morgan.  The area of the team’s prior playing site and much of the area from which its fans were drawn is now inside a federal installation which is heavily guarded.

Team owner Coveyou is 59 years old and has been on the staff of the Commissioner of the Iowa Department of Public Safety since 1979.  He has been married to Carolyn for 37 years.  Their family includes two basset hounds.

Coveyou is a veteran of 20 years of Rotisserie baseball.  He has teams in both the American and National Leagues of the Almost All Iowa Rotisserie League (AAIRL), of which he was one of the organizers in 1987.  Fellow owner Eric Borseth of the Altoona Warriors also plays in the AAIRL and he and Coveyou are the only owners who have played in that league in every season of its existence.  Coveyou has also participated previously in simulation leagues organized by VBG Commissioner Darrell Hanson, although not ones which are computer based, a distinction also shared by Eric Borseth.

Coveyou is a life long Tigers fans, having followed them since 1958. While he is a big Al Kaline fan, he recalls his favorite player of those years being Harvey Kuenn.  He is on the Detroit Tigers fans e-mail list, along with fellow VBG owners Jeremy Pulcifer and Paul Colbert.
