| I am 56 years old (as of
mid-2011) and live in Altoona, Iowa (a suburb of Des Moines) with my
wife Janet. We have two sons, a 27-year-old
who teaches middle school math and coaches volleyball and soccer
in Des Moines, and a 23-year-old who is the Director of Youth
and Family Ministry for a church in north central Iowa.
Until 3 years ago I had lived almost all of my adult life in
Manchester, a small town in northeast Iowa. 38 years ago I set
out to become a high school social studies teacher but got sidetracked
into politics and spent 16 years as a member of the Iowa House of
Representatives, from 1979 through 1994. (This is when I met Eric
Borseth and Mike Coveyou when they joined my Ballpark Baseball league.)
Since Iowa has a part-time legislature, I worked in a variety of other
jobs during this time, first as a substitute teacher, then as a crop
insurance adjuster, and finally as a political science instructor for the
University of Northern Iowa and economics instructor for Upper Iowa
University. In 1994 I left the legislature (voluntarily), spent a year in
a job working with city and county economic development programs in
northeast Iowa, and then went to work for Iowa State University Extension
as the director of the Delaware County Extension
Service. Even though I thought I had left politics in 1994, I still got involved in public policy from time to time, including a term on the Manchester City Council and serving as the chairman of the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission. Then in late 2007 I was appointed to the Iowa Utilities Board, a 3-member quasi-judicial commission that regulates public electric, gas, water, and telephone utilities. (In most other states we would be called the Public Utility Commission or the Public Service Commission.) This position is a full-time job, so I left northeast Iowa and moved to the Des Moines area. My term runs until the end of April, 2013, at which time I will either be reappointed to serve another 6 years or have to find something else to do. Most people play baseball sim games because they are baseball fans, but I took the opposite route. As a kid growing up in Elkader, Iowa I wasn’t much of a baseball fan, despite the fact that my parents were close friends of a former big league second baseman who lived next door. That all changed during my freshman year at the University of Kansas where I became addicted to a local tabletop game called Ballpark Baseball that could only be played in The Ballpark, a Lawrence bar. That got me hooked on the real stuff, and I was a die-hard Royals and Cardinals fan during the 1970’s and 1980’s (although my favorite all-time players are Mike Schmidt and Joe Morgan). My interest in major league baseball waned in the 1990’s as I became more involved with my kids’ youth league baseball and basketball teams, to the point where I don't pay a lot of attention to current MLB events. A SABR member, I still have a passionate interest in the history of the game, and have been marginally involved with SABR's BioProject. Other interests include history (especially the American Civil War), fishing, almost any kind of music, travel (especially to places of historical significance) and playing almost any kind of strategy game. | |||||||
