Owner Bio
I am 52 years old and live in Manchester with my wife Janet.  I have two sons, a 23-year-old recent graduate of Wartburg College who teaches middle school math in Des Moines, and an almost-20-year-old who is finishing his 2nd year at Wartburg.  35 years ago I set out to become a high school social studies teacher but got sidetracked into politics and spent 16 years as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives. (This is when I met Mike Coveyou when he and his Bombers joined my Ballpark Baseball league.) Since Iowa has a part-time legislature, I worked in a variety of other jobs during this time, first as a substitute teacher, then as a crop insurance adjuster, and finally as a political science instructor for the University of Northern Iowa and economics instructor for Upper Iowa University. In 1994 I left the legislature (voluntarily), and now work for Iowa State University Extension as the director of the Delaware County Extension Service.

Most people play baseball sim games because they are baseball fans, but I took the opposite route. As a kid growing up in Elkader I wasn’t much of a baseball fan, despite having a former big league second baseman for a next-door neighbor. That all changed during my freshman year at the University of Kansas where I became addicted to a local tabletop game called Ballpark Baseball that could only be played in The Ballpark, a Lawrence bar. I became hooked on the real stuff, and was a die-hard Royals and Cardinals fan during the 1970’s and 1980’s (although my favorite all-time players are Mike Schmidt and Joe Morgan). My interest in major league baseball waned in the 1990’s as I became more involved with my kids’ youth league baseball and basketball teams, to the point where I don't pay too much attention to current MLB events. A SABR member, I still have a passionate interest in the history of the game, and am marginally involved with SABR's BioProject.

I still get involved in public policy from time to time. I currently serve as chair of the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission  which sets rules for the Department of Natural Resources and hears contested cases involving environmental infractions. In late 2003 I was elected to the Manchester City Council. Other interests include military history (especially American Civil War and the WWII European theater air war), fishing, almost any kind of music, and playing almost any kind of strategy game.
